Three generations

I have always read the description of a family “consisting of a man and his wife and his sons and daughters and their sons and daughters”as being the beginning of a pattern that would continue for as many generations as possible. That interpretation might be correct but it may also be that there were limits – that once a man had grandchildren he would then act independently in such a seeing as this even if his father were still living.
