Periwinkle passing

I felt tonight that I should record the death of yet another guinea pig. It happened last Friday with our youngest little sweetheart. Mariah has noticed her getting sick and had diligently called for her for a while and it had seemed recently that she was getting more active but then Friday afternoon Mariah asked me to come see in her room and when I came she showed me Periwinkle and told me that she was still alive but couldn’t seem to move about. I ended up holding her for about half an hour during which time everyone who wanted got a chance to say goodbye. For parts of the time she did some squirming and stretching. She yawned some and looked at us. Mostly she lay there, serene but likely not comfortable inside. Finally she stopped and I could tell that she had died. It was peaceful and there truly was comfort in having that last little bit of time to pet her and express our love as we bid farewell.

I layed her in the shoe box she had been in earlier and left it in the larger pen until I found that Chocolate Eclair seemed to enjoy snuggling up to her deceased cage-mate. That was cute but seemed unsanitary so I removed the box with Periwinkle. I couldn’t bring myself to bury her until the next afternoon between sessions of conference.

I think the thing that prompted me to record this was setting pictures of our first guinea pig, Molly Wobbles, on Chromecast which just drive home how much love we have felt for and from each of these precious pets.
