Quite the crew

I realized this morning that if someone ran into our group and asked our names they would never guess that it was a family group. With 7 men we have 6 different family names. The other interesting thing I realized was that we also have 6 camp units – 3 tents and 3 hammocks. The one tent with two people has the two people that share a name. Tai Besinger has a hammock and so does Brick Despain. Andy and Steve Gibbons share a tent. David Miller has a hammock and Jeff Roderick and Phil Warner each have a tent. For those in the know, Steve is the key. He has 1 brother, three brothers in law,a father in law, and a cousin and none of those six connections shares a last name with each other.

We had a great time today hiking in beautiful weather and exploring various beautiful features in the gulch including Indian ruins, petroglyphs, and the Black Lagoon. We had some soft rain in the morning while people were asleep and a little bit more before we left but the day has been rain-free and just the right temperature. So far the only thing I have missed is the stars – apparently they were brilliant at about 3AM but we had cloud cover when I woke up.

After writing the above we got a short cloudburst. We thought we had lucked out as our camp was under an overhang and then the waterfalls started falling from the plateau above. One of them washed most of the campsite so that we had to move the tents and Brick’s hammock. Everything is fine but we’ve been watching the river get deeper and faster.
