Jesus wasted no time in teaching His gospel when He visited the Nephites. He taught them about baptism (the covenant path) and how to be peaceable followers of Christ. Those who apply the beatitudes in adjusting their conduct will become more like Christ. Doing that and making covenants are the essence of the gospel. If any man will do those two things, the atonement will cover any errors that remain.
