The girls asked my why I prepared 10 sacrament cups when we never have the whole family present for sacrament – especially today as we only had 4 people present when we started. I explained to them that the Atonement was infinite and that if it were not infinite then the hope of at least some would be in vain. I said that likewise the ordinances needed to be prepared sufficient that all could choose to partake – even those who weren’t showing up on time.
Of course in a ward sacrament meeting the provision is that we can prepare and bless more sacrament bread and water if necessary. In the home setting we can and should know the upper limit of who could partake in any given week. It might be argued that we can also generally know who will partake in any given week and that we are thus denying nobody if we prepare for less. That may be true but by preparing for all I am also reminding everyone present of the infinite nature of the Atonement.
