I have come to believe that when we are told that the brother of Jared failed to call upon the Lord for 4 years it doesn’t mean that he never prayed in that time. I believe it means that the prayers he offered were likely perfunctory and that he was assuming he knew the will of the Lord rather than seeking to know the will of the Lord.
After three hours of chastening he began to earnestly seek to know what the Lord would have him do.
