When Alma spoke to the people in the land of Gideon he had a message of joy to offer – it reminds me of the message that Samuel the Lamanite wanted to deliver to the people of Zerahemla decades later. Daniels story seems the more common, where the people rejected the first message and then got a replacement message calling them to repentance.
In this case, Alma was able to deliver the message of joy – which still included an invitation to repent and be baptized.
