Who is the audience?

At first as I read I felt as though Mormon was speaking to us in our day, in the end of times before the second coming of Christ. Suddenly my perspective shifted and I received the words as if they were spoken to the people of his day. I realize of course that the words are applicable in both contexts and to both audiences but it was interesting to suddenly feel what it must have been like to live in that time and receive this message.

Though they were not living in the end of times they were living in the end of the Nephite times and living among wickedness comparable to anything we will be experiencing. They must often have felt hopeless when surrounded by so much wickedness. Hearing the words from Mormon might have injected some hope in their hearts that there was a purpose for them to remain faithful even if they could have little or no effect on those around them who chose wickedness.
