Alma 36
“Remember” is an important gospel concept as Alma counsels Helaman to do as he has done by remembering the captivity of their fathers. On the other hand, I sometimes have a problem with the way the saints today sometimes remember the persecutions of their fathers and get a complex about it, always feeling like victims. It seems that there must be a better way to remember. I think the key is not to focus on the nature of the captivity, but rather to focus on the Lord who did deliver them. For those who have been born into families with the gospel it is important to remember the captivity of their fathers to remind them that the Lord has been preparing their way even before their birth. For those who are born without the gospel and then are converted, they should remember that the Lord has been delivering his people for many years, that this is not a new experience to have hardship even after making covenants.
