The sons of Eli were acting like the priests if strange gods, corrupting the people and living in fatness off of their offerings. It should be no wonder that when the battle was going poorly against the Philistines they would treat the ark of the covenant as if it were an idol – that their God was the ark, not that the ark was a remembrance of things that God had done for Israel. With sucha faulty concept it is little surprised that God would allow them to lose what had become an idol in their eyes.
