I notice that the path to succession guaranteed a more righteous king for the people of Noah because if all of Noah’s sons were are wicked as he was they would have followed him and the people would have selected someone else to speak for them as their king. The people had two years of peace to form some social stability and come to terms with their subservient position to the Lamanites before the Lamanites attacked thinking that they had kidnapped their daughters. It must have been very hard for Limmhi to understand why they would suddenly break their oath after two years of his people faithfully executing their obligations to the Lamanites.
