For the benefit of man

All the resources of the earth are made for the benefit and use of man—to be used with judgement and not to excess or by extortion. I believe that “not to excess” means not more than we reasonably need and not more than is ecologically safe (thus the need for judgement). As for “not by extortion” that line seems less clear to me. I think it means that we shouldn’t look for ways to use our resources that run contrary to the nature of our purpose in earth or to their natural function. Again, that’s a vague line but perhaps it is a question we should consider in deciding how we use resources.
