I think that one of the reasons that the Lord gave this revelation of scripture to Joseph was to begin teaching him the information for the Endowment. Here is much of the storyline and the covenants for the ordinance were revealed after the Kirtland Temple was dedicated.
Knowing that the term “Day” has no meaning like our use of it without a sun etc. it is easy to conceive of the fact that it’s use in the creation story does not indicate 24 hours. If we think of the days as stages instead then it is easy to believe in the creation of the form of the earth before the division of water and land, before the introduction of a light source. It is easy to recognize that plants were developed in a stage prior to the introduction of animal life. And it is easy to accept that the introduction of animal life could have been a long process completed in stages until the earth was ready for the spirits created by our Father in Heaven to inhabit it.
