I’ve invited the kids to think about symbolism and imagery that they would want to include in a family flag. After we have had time to collect ideas we will share with them and give them minimal parameters and let anyone who wants to submit a flag idea in 1.5″X1″ format
Mariah immediately asked if we could use whatever flag we come up with in family t-shirts at a reunion. (I had already thought the same thing before I shared the flag making project with the kids.)
For myself:
- Green represents mental health awareness and since mental health has significantly shaped our family we should incorporate green in the design.
- I want to find a way to represent the idea that we don’t abandon anyone in the family—no idea yet if there is some symbolism to use our a color that might convey an appropriate idea.
- I want to represent the 8 children connected to a central element that is the family/parents. I want it to stick to 8 not trying to represent if there is or isn’t a significant other or grandchildren in the next generation.
Noah came to me after the meeting to say that he thinks it would be cool to include a pack of wolves in the flag.
Mariah came to tell me that she thinks the flag should include:
- 10-pointed star with points disconnected (tethered by a string)
- Colors
- red (strength)
- green (growth also mental health awareness)
- orange (creativity)
- yellow (hope & individuality)
- colors arranged in some kind of stripes
