Torment and repentance

I wonder how much of the 3 days were spent in torment got Alma and how many in repentance. Some of the descriptions seem to suggest that he spoke soon after he cried out for redemption but when he says that he had repented it makes me wonder if he spent a significant portion of his unconscious time recognizing and renouncing his past sins.
