D&C + Church History – Lesson 3

A disturber and an annoyer – I would love to be called that in relation to the kingdom of the adversary.

Two things to teach –

  • That we can learn and be taught from on high as Joseph was when we come to the Lord with our questions
  • The larger significance of this particular event:
    • The Lord prepared for centuries to enable the restoration of the gospel
    • With the gospel on the earth today we need not live in confusion concerning the nature of God and His plan of Salvation

The Methodist minister with whom Joseph shared the story of his vision was not just an acquaintance, but a person of authority and a friend to Joseph. How much harder did that make it on Joseph when such a friend rejected his story so fully?

What things do we know for ourselves – independent of any other authority? Do we have a testimony that we will receive if we ask the Lord humbly and sincerely? Do we realize that the answer will at times be as simple as a calm assurance by the Spirit?

Even in our day we are still called upon to choose who to join and what to pursue. We can take these questions to the Lord to find out for ourselves what is best. As we receive answers we should remember that some answers will be true for everyone while other questions will have answers that are true for us (what course of study should I pursue?) but may not be the right answer for others. In all cases, we should not mock those who have not received the answers that we have sought.
