I wonder if Alma knew how close the time was to when the Savior would visit the Nephites. Also, I wonder when in his life Mormon became aware of this prophecy. Even when he did it is possible that he could have temporary hope for the people because the prophecy was that they would be fully ripe within 400 years of Christ’s visitation which means that they had as much as 50 years after Mormon died (had they chosen to repent).
