I wonder if the confusion of some of those who “wrest[ed] the scriptures” was with the doctrine of foreordination. Perhaps they were led to believe that because they had previously chosen poorly they were foreordained to be sinners and so they reveled in their role. Alma directly says that every man may choose either path – sin or righteousness.
This doctrine is so simple and pure – live righteously to be restored to righteousness. Be merciful if you wish to have mercy restored to you. Know that evil will be restored to you if you choose to associate with evil.
