When the king of the Lamanites proclaimed that the people should not lay their hands on or detain the Nephite missionaries there was a precedent to that action as an earlier king had appointed the Nephite priests of Noah and appointed them as the teachers over his people. The kingdom had received great benefit from their secular teaching of Nephite language and record keeping.
