It must have had a powerful impact on the incoming Lamanite army to see their king please on behalf of the Nephites. I imagine it would have looked much different to them if the Nephites had come with weapons while the landlord king pleaded for them—they would have believed the king was under threat rather than genuinely interested in pleading the case of the Nephites.
