When Pilate said “behold the man” he did not realize that he was presenting the Man against which all other men should measure themselves. I also thought how falling it must have been to the Jewish leaders when Pilate insisted on leaving the inscription “the King of the Jews” over their protests with a dismissive “what I have written I have written.” I’m sure he knew he was concerning the Jews in the eyes of Rome but I doubt he considered that the inscription was a consultation of the Jewish leaders before God in His judgement seat.
