Ulterior motives

The judges who had heard Nephi prophesy were not interested in the truth but they were very interested in making a case against Nephi. If they had not seen an opportunity to make Nephi look guilty they might have instead ignored the five who had been sent and left them to take the fall or even assumed that one or more of them was who was secretly helping Nephi. (I think they may have sincerely believed that Nephi was acting deceitfully, like they would have if it was to their benefit.) These judges didn’t care about catching the real murderer, just in making Nephi appear guilty. If they had known who the murderer was and that He was not connected to Nephi they might still have tried to use him to frame Nephi —offering him a deal like that offered Nephi but in reverse such as “admit to the murder but claim that Nephi considered with you and we’ll make sure you get off easily while he takes the bulk of the blame.”
