I can only imagine life for ether during the four years of gathering. On one hand there was no way in the land but on the other hand both arms were gathering up every last person they could find so Ether still had to keep himself hidden. I expect that it was during those four years that he wrote the bulk of his record.
After all except Coriantumr has been killed it would have been safe for Ether to come out of hiding but there would be nowhere for him to go that would have been free of the carnage of war. Death would have been more comfortable than being reminded of what he had just witnessed.
