I never really considered how much Nephi tells us about the words of his father outside the telling of his dream that sets the stage for the more detailed revelation of his own that Nephi relates. It’s clear that he didn’t hear an interesting dream and then go dream up his own version of it the next week with more editorial narration. Lehi shared his dream and was probably teaching more about what he learned from it for days or weeks while Nephi was soaking it up and pondering the teachings before he was given the experience if being able to express his desire to know for himself and received the answer that he could receive the knowledge he sought with the requirement that he would need to witness of Christ afterward.
