When the Lord talks about what will happen to all the nations that fight against Zion in the latter days I think it is important to define “nations” and to define “Zion” so that we may accurately understand what is happening and will happen.
In this context “nations” refers to any of 1) the geographic nations as recognized by the world, 2) ethnic or cultural nations which don’t necessarily align with geographic nations, 3) ideological nations—groups who align around ideas as opposed to heritage or geography—and 4) the multitude of individuals collectively who fit the definition of fighting against Zion.
In this context “Zion” refers to any of 1) the recognized descendants of Abraham (genealogical and cultural Jews in modern understanding)—those who have protections through the old covenant, 2) Christianity as a cultural force (encompassing people across the multitude of Christian sects and denominations)—these have protections specifically tied to the new covenant, 3) the organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints—which is the official vehicle on earth empowered by the Lord through priesthood keys to promote the new and everlasting covenant in the latter days and is protected specifically through the promises of the restoration, and 4) Christianity as a practice as defined by the behaviors, attitudes, and actions consistent with the teachings of Christ (which includes people across all nations and faith traditions throughout the world who live and act in ways consistent with the teachings of Christ in their day to day lives).
