D&C 49
Plants and animals are ordained for the use of man “that he might have in abundance.” The Lord did not design the earth for subsistence and meager existence, but for joy and abundance. This does not meant hat conservation is wrong, we are supposed to be wise stewards of the earth, but it does mean that we should make use with gladness of the resources which are ours – not with a cross of care upon our backs that we are somehow not worthy of that which we have been given.

It is interesting that the Lord told them at the outset that the Shakers were seeking the truth, but not all of it – that suggests at the beginning that they would not accept what they were given because it did not meet their expectations.
