Mosiah discussed the mission to the Lamanites that his sons proposed. The open ended mission they proposed would have caused him to talk with them about the succession which is why he knew that none of them were willing to be king after him. I wonder if part of their reluctance was the pride they had before their conversion. I’m sure it was the refusal of his sons combined with the things he learned while translating the record of the Jaredites that convinced him to alter the governing structure of the nation going forward.
