Fight or die

The solution to the problem of king-men was to give them a binary choice: they could either join the military to defend their country or they could die. Manny died fighting Moroni and Pahoran but those who didn’t die in that fight were forced to join the army or be executed.

Undoubtedly, those who joined the army were dispersed throughout units of patriotic free men and would be subject to military discipline (execution) if they said it did anything to undermine the cause of freedom. (It’s not unlike keeping prisoners busy with work to make it easier to guard them.)

Perhaps a general lesson here is that significant amounts of leisure time tend to create trouble of one kind or another.)
