Mormon 2
While I was reading about the Nephites beginning to sorrow I was called away to change Mariah’s diaper. I discovered that sorrow from sin and pain from diaper rash are very similar. They are symptoms of a problem. Mariah was aware of her pain and did not like it, but so long as she was unwilling to come for help the pain would only get worse. The reason that she sometimes will not come for help is that she is unwilling to go through the painful cleansing of a diaper change. The longer she waits the more painful the cleansing process will be. If she came when there was a stench but no pain the cleansing would be painless as well, but fully as effective as the more painful cleansing that she received later. Mormon was hopeful when he saw the sorrow of the Nephites, but their sorrow was only an indication of the pain of sin, it was not an indication that they were turning to God to be cleansed from the sin. They were so hardened that they went to their destruction without going to their Father and partaking of the painful cleansing process for their great sins. Had they turned to Him when their sins were small there would have been no pain in the cleansing repentance process but they would be as clean as if they had chosen to turn to Him after it hurt enough to cause their sorrow.
