I was talking to Ben Dalton at the Ward Walkabout last night. We talked about the challenge of communicating details about the walkabout and we talked about boy scouts and the church young men’s program. Those are two problems (effective group communication; and strategies to help teenage boys become young men) that I am very interested in. I woke up early this morning with ideas to explore for addressing each of those.
For the communication I’m thinking about a public calendar that people can subscribe to if they want or visit from a link or QR code or have embedded in another site such as a Facebook group. I was also thinking about how to make the calendar most effective by not making it tied to the Ward by name, insisting that all calendar items are targeted at the neighborhood regardless of affiliation with the church and having a rule that only events which are non-commercial and open to anyone would be included.
With regard to turning boys into men I’m thinking that incorporating a capstone project into the young men’s goal-setting oriented program might be all that is needed. The capstone project would be modeled after eagle projects—at least 100 hours of effort, defined and organized by the young men individually whether the project is executed individually or with group support.
