It struck me today that the brother of Jared did a lot of praying and preparing himself before he took the stones to the Lord and asked that they be lighted. I’m sure he was praying and pondering before he styled in the idea of lit stones and I’m sure that he was praying and seeking the Lord throughout the process of crafting the stones. Despite that preparation he was startled when he saw the finger of the Lord.
I also see the pattern here of the Lord preparing things. He showed the brother of Jared all things and commanded that the brother of Jared should write them down but that they should not go forth until after His mortal ministry in His own due time. In fact, He gave the two stones for interpreters saying, “wherefore I will cause in my own due time that these stones shall magnify to the eyes of men these things which ye shall write.” (Ether 3:24) This tells me that the interpreters were prepared from the beginning but would only be activated when the Lord saw fit.
Even today, the Lord has prepared the knowledge of all things for the children of men for the time when they “repent of their iniquity and become clean before the Lord.” (Ether 4:6) Just as when the brother of Jared wrote, as commanded, the writing which Moroni made have also been sealed up along with a sufficient explanation for us to know what has been sealed and the conditions for having that knowledge manifest.
