Before the people of Limhi were delivered from bondage the Lord softened the hearts of their enemies after they humbled themselves to ease the burdens from their backs. I suspect that could have happened more quickly if they had humbled themselves before they tried and failed to free themselves through force of arms. Having attached the Lamanites three times first, the Lamanites would have been less inclined to ease their burdens.
Also, I find it interesting that the people of Limhi entered the covenant to serve God after the arrival of Ammon. I expect they were finally converted based on their experience with Alma combined with learning the teachings of king Benjamin.
