A pinch of perspective

Over the last three days at Old Pinery (plus getting ready to go and unpacking after getting home) I have walked tens of thousands of steps without having to try to reach a goal. (13.5k, 22.6k, & 9.7k) Along with that, I thought about how little we were trying to accomplish during those days (it was a vacation after all) and how much time was spent in setting up, cooking, and cleaning up. I began to consider exactly how different our lives are now from the bulk of history—we can accomplish so many survival basics with such a little amount of effort that we have to consciously try to stay physically active enough to remain healthy.

I began to question if that was truly a positive trade-off. Upon further reflection I realized that we are under greater responsibility to allocate our time in ways that produce beneficial outcomes for ourselves and for others. With so much more disposable time (not devoted to survival) we should be conscientiously seeking

  1. to build relationships of eternal value
  2. to pursue goals that improve life for our fellow men, and
  3. to move forward the work of salvation on both sides of the veil
