Moroni 1 – 6
When Moroni received charge of the records he only expected to finish the record of his father. That was the last two chapters of Mormon. As he continued to live he received the command from the Lord that he add an abridgment of the record of the Jaredites. That is the book of Ether. It may be that this also included the sealed portion of the gold plates as a not-so-abridged version of the vision of the brother of Jared. I think Moroni wandered and hid for a long time, thinking that his work was done. After much time had passed he began to feel that he must still be alive for a reason and felt prompted to return to the record and write some of his own words for the latter days. Interestingly he will choose to include three chapters of things his father had written to him. The first part includes specific instructions on how to perform the basic ordinances of the church and how meetings are to be conducted.
