Alma 1: 26-33
The people of the church did as Alma had instructed when they were first formed and imparted of the word freely, worked diligently, and shared their substance freely. The result was that they became richer than those who set their hearts on the things of the world. They achieved a high degree of peace among themselves and society was peaceful generally because they enforced their laws. Those outside the church were careful not to break the laws for fear of punishment though they were able to pursue their desire for wealth by purchasing the appearance of riches – just like today.
