1 Samuel 2
Hannah asked the Lord for one child promising that if He gave her a male child she would give him to serve before the Lord all his life. I had forgotten that after she kept her promise Eli blessed Elkanah and Hannah that they would have other children in payment for the one she lent to the Lord. The result was that Hannah had three more sons and two daughters after Samuel was born.
Because of the wickedness of Eli’s sons the people hated making offerings to the Lord. They took of the flesh that was to be offered before burning the sacrifice (likely taking more than they would have received if they did things in the proper order) and they committed adultery with the women who came to the tabernacle (I have heard that similar practices were known among other religions of the day).
Eli served because he was descended from Aaron but because of the wickedness of his sons his house was cut off from serving before the Lord. I’m not sure but this sounds like the end of the direct line of first sons from Aaron serving before the Lord.
