Deuteronomy 12
The Canaanites, like most peoples I expect, built groves and alters and other places for religious rites wherever they felt like doing so. The Lord commands that His people perform their religious ceremonies only where He designates. While they have been in the wilderness they have been permitted to build altars wherever they thought proper to offer their sacrifices but once they are established by God in the land of their inheritance they shall only offer their offerings in the place that He shall choose.
