The firstborn of both men and animals belonged to the house of Aaron and the tribe of Levi, yet they were commanded to redeem (rather than claim) the firstborn of men and the firstborn of any unclean beast.
The Levites were to live off the tithes of the people and offer one tenth of their substance as an offering to the Lord for their tithe.
