Leviticus 17 – 18
I’m not absolutel clear whether this means that the people could not kill anything for food without bringing it to the tabernacle as a peace offering (seeing as they were given part of such offerings to eat) or if this was an injnction against killing something as a sacrifice on their own and claiming that it was a sacrifice to the Lord without bringing it to His tabernacle.
On the other hand, the injunction against eating blood is extremely clear. I wonder if drinking blood was a common practice of the day in some cultures. I think very rare stakes would qualify as eating blood.
I do not understand at all how any people could sacrifice any of their children. Although I abhor the thought, at least sacrificing the children of strangers would put some distance between yourself and the sacrifice but to accept the possibility of sending your own child as a sacrifice, even if the sacrificial child was held in reverence for being chosen, is completely unfathomable to me. I would hate any God that would expect such a thing – even if I did not know that such a thing is totally antithetical to the nature of godhood.
