Leviticus 4
When Saul tried to offer a sacrifice in the stead of Samuel he displayed a gross ignorance concerning the basic tenets of their religion. Perhaps it would be even more accurate to say that what he demonstrated was his belief that as king he was above the laws of their faith. When a priest mistakenly sinned his offering was equal to the offering required when all the people sinned. When a ruler sinned it was more than other people were required (a male as opposed to a female goat or the people could bring a female sheep as well) but less than all the people (a bullock).
