Mormon 7 – 8
I’m confident that Moroni stayed with his father until such time as Mormon insisted that Moroni go away rather than be captured together by the lamanites and both be killed. Personally, I expect that Mormon had instructed Moroni that he would have to save himself whenever any Lamanites closed in on them and then shortly (anywhere from minutes to days) before he was captured Mormon gave the command that they separate and Moroni probably stayed close enough to witness his father’s capture and quite possibly his execution as well.
As he begins writing to fulfil the command of his father Moroni is filled with sadness for his fathers death and the destruction and wickedness of his people. It is probably in doing this that he really begins the transformation into being a prophet in his own right. As he fulfilled the command of his father he was filled with the spirit such that he would later be prepared to receive the prompting to record the words of the Book of Ether and his own words regarding the true practices of the church. I hope that during his years alone he was occasionally visited by one or more of the three Nephites (whom he had met while Mormon still lived).
Hearing of fires and tempests and vapors of smoke in foreign lands may be an indication of the spread of information more than an increase of those events themselves.
