I expect that Laman and Lemuel were excited to hear Lehi murmuring. They may even have believed that they could then convince him to return to Jerusalem – it might have been less than a one month journey back at that point. Later when Ishmael died they were desirous to return to Jerusalem – so they were still close enough to consider that possibility.
