Genesis 39
It just occurred to me that the Ishmeelite traders would have been cousins to the sons of Israel – I wonder how many of them in that transaction recognized the connection. (Joseph was probably the most likely to make the connection because he probably paid attention to his genealogy and the genealogy of the covenant that he was to perpetuate.) There is a movie of this story that depicts Potiphar as being sympathetic to Joseph and casting him into prison only to keep up the image of supporting his wife. Another possibility that I can think of is that Potiphar is used to dealing with servants who would willingly get away with anything they can as they acquire authority within the household.
