Journal 5 September 2011

I went to work this Labor Day since we had no big plans figuring I might as well save the 8 PTO hours for sometime when we really had something to do with the day. I got to see a live webcast of the Palmetto Freedom Forum that Senator Jim DeMint organized. I really liked the format of allowing all the candidates to give longer answers to multiple questions one candidate at a time. It was much better than the 30-second back-and-forth of other debates (although I think we should have a few of those as well). I left work after just less than a full day and our family met Hyrum and Cynthia Mills at the splash-pad in Foxboro where our kids played for an hour or two before we went to their house for dinner and games. It was a very nice evening. On my way to the splash-pad and while there I thought of how much cheaper it must be to build and maintain a splash-pad rather than a city pool (not to mention that it is probably safer for the kids), and also how much safer playgrounds have become with improvements such as soft rubber turf in place of sand or wood chips. With those playground improvements it would be nice if we could also return our society to a more stable and supportive system as it once was rather than let it continue on the degraded course it has been taking over the last half-century.
