Omni, Words of Mormon
These generations are long. The indications are that each soon who keeps the record lives about 50 years past his father. Unless each son is living 15 or 20 years longer than his father (which is not a reasonable guess) these children must be born when their fathers are nearly 50 years old.
I am not sure that Mosiah was king of the Nephites before he left. If he had been he would likely have been called something like eighth Nephi. On the other hand, if he was not their ruler how did he have the plates when they left?
Mormon searched among the records probably because Benjamin recorded receiving the small plates from Amaleki and Mormon wanted to incorporate Antung of value from that record – which ended up being the whole thing.
It may well be that the Nephites were on the verge of being completely wiped out when Mosiah led them to the land of Zerahemla. By combining with the people of Zerahemla and putting some extra dreams between themselves and the Lamanites they were able to survive.
