Mosiah 19 – 22
Noah accused Alma of trying to cause division and contention among his purple but it was the actions of Noah against Alma that caused division among his people, specifically among those who did not follow Alma.
I wonder if Limhi put Gideon in a position of prominence in order to unite those who opposed his father under his leadership. If so he gave Gideon more than a token role and whether Gideon saw him independent of his father at first or not, Gideon obviously came to see Limhi as a leader deserving of support. Of course the fact that Limhi was among those who stated behind when his father commanded the men to abandon the women and children (when many others obeyed that command and later changed their minds) might have set Limhi well above his father immediately in the eyes of those who felt as Gideon did. That choice might have made his leadership relatively easy to accept from the beginning.
Limhi and the Lamanites king both seem fairly reasonable here – taking time to discover the issue and each being purported to own any guilt that was legitimately theirs. Despite both being reasonable this event caused friction that made living together in harmony impossible for their people.
