Alma 49 – 50
There is a saying that armies are always fighting the previous war. The idea is that their tactics are built around the previous technologies. Moroni demonstrates that it is possible to learn from the previous war in order to prepare for the coming war.

We are told how Moroni upgraded the fortifications of the cities and moved from simply fortifying individual cities to fortifying the land as a whole. I suspect that he also made improvements to the armor of his men as well based on how it performed in battle as the Lamanites grew accustomed to facing protected enemies.

When Moroni sent his armies to drive the Lamanites out of the east wilderness they likely didn’t come with the intent to slaughter the people. I imagine that they came with a show of force and a declaration that the people were living in Nephite territory and must vacate. They might even have given the people 72 hours to gather their belongings or have assisted them in their exodus. I might be expecting to much from Moroni but he didn’t like bloodshed so it makes sense that he would allow them to leave peacefully if they would.

Mormon launches into his “and thus we see” right before showing the inverse of the prosperity he had been describing.
