Justice in Nephite society was only available at this time in the form of condemnation for the wicked poor. The righteous were condemned for their righteousness and the wicked rich were pardoned for their wealth. This is a state that it is easy to imagine in the United States today. I don’t think we’re where they were yet but we are close enough to be able to see that as distinctly possible.

When accused of uniting themselves with the band established by Gadianton most (if not all) of the people would have denied that in their minds because the group(s) they had joined were surely offshoots that did not claim the mantle or name of Gadianton. If the parallel characteristics were pointed out they might have privately acknowledged the connection that Nephi was referring to.
