Mormon had been leading the Nephite armies for 35 years by the time the Lord invited him to offer the people a final opportunity to repent. Within 25 years of that the people had been completely eliminated. The idea that Mormon first reserved command of the Nephite armies because other leaders refused to lead then send all the more plausible when I consider that Mormon himself eventually refused to lead them.
