It is interesting that the people associated Christ with any of a number of past prophets. Apparently they were culturally attuned to having someone take the mantle of someone before them.
Was Peter called to lead the church after the crucification because he was the one willing to say openly and with conviction to the Savoir that He was the Messiah? Perhaps this was a topic that the apostles had tiptoed around, always waiting for Christ to declare Himself but unwilling to feel like they were making assumptions in their feeling that He really was THE Savior.
It was after Peter made that declaration that Christ began to open up more fully to His apostles regarding what was in store for Him and them.
